The kabbalistic circle of Amsterdam: bridging worlds
“It was unbelievable,” our founder remarked. “While deep in Granada researching the Mekubal Isaac of Granada, I discovered that his book was printed in Amsterdam—also known as Mokum Alef, or simply Mokum Today.”
The Kabbalistic Circle of Amsterdam: masters of worlds
Amsterdam Kabbala Tour
“It was unbelievable,” our founder said. “While researching the Kabbalist Isaac of Granada in Spain, I found out that his book was actually printed in Amsterdam—known in Hebrew as Mokum Alef, or simply Mokum.”
Few people know that Amsterdam was once a living center of Kabbalistic study and Jewish spiritual life. After the expulsion from Spain and Portugal, many Sephardic Jews found refuge here. They brought with them not only their language and customs, but also centuries of spiritual knowledge.
Amsterdam became a crossroads—a place where Jewish thinkers from Morocco, Italy, Spain, and Portugal exchanged ideas. In the 17th century, it was one of the world’s leading cities for Hebrew publishing. It wasn’t just trade and diplomacy that flourished here, but also deep spiritual inquiry: the study of Torah and Kabbala.
You can still feel that energy today. It’s no accident that the world’s oldest Jewish library, Ets Haim, is housed here—inside the Portuguese Synagogue, right in the heart of the city.
Join us to explore this lesser-known story of Amsterdam: where commerce, culture, and Kabbala met—and left a living trace.
