Spain: The Craddle of Kabbalah
Kabbalah—the mystical core of Judaism—found its most revolutionary expression in medieval Spain. Although its roots began in 12th-century Provence, it was in Catalonia and Castile that Kabbalah blossomed into a transformative spiritual movement.
In Girona (Gerona), the Circle of Gerona shaped the foundational concept of Kabbalah’s Tree of Life, giving it the structure and names of the sefirot as we know them worldwide today. This Tree of Life became the map of creation, binding divine energy, human consciousness, and the cosmos.
Spain was also where the Zohar, the fundamental mystical text of Kabbalah, was composed—unveiling hidden layers of Torah wisdom that continue to inspire seekers globally.
Beyond mystics, Spain gifted Judaism with visionary poets like Solomon Ibn Gabirol and Moses ben Ezra, whose profound works, including famed poems used in Jewish High Holiday services such as Keter Malchut and El Nora Alilila, still echo through Jewish worship everywhere.
This vibrant combination of mystical innovation and poetic soul made Spain the fertile ground from which Kabbalah spread across the Jewish world — especially to Safed, the cradle of the later Kabbalistic renaissance.
This rich legacy made Spain the fertile ground from which Kabbalah spread globally, especially influencing the later mystical renaissance in Safed.
The Sephardic Jews who were forced to leave the Iberian peninsula could carry little in the way of concrete riches, but the treasure of intellectual achievement they took with them was immense.
In no field was this truer than in the realm of Jewish mysticism. And the results of that involuntary exodus could be seen almost immediately. By the 16th century, the Zohar was an integral part of Jewish religious thought, and kabbalistic thinking was becoming part of the mainstream, spurred by the dispersion of its principal adherents. New intellectual centers sprang up in Italy, Turkey, and, most of all, Safed (Tz’fat in Hebrew) in Palestine.
What Is Our Aim as Circle of Gerona?
Our main goal as an organizations is to help leaders grow and transform. But alongside this, we pay tribute to the great thinkers and the often overlooked legacies of medieval Spanish Kabbalah. These stories and teachings are not as visible as castles or cities, yet they played a crucial role in shaping culture, thought, and spiritual life. We aim to inspire by sharing these lesser-known stories, remarkable events, and important knowledge. Our hope is to bring to light the wisdom and courage of those teachers whose influence still guides us today.
